HAYNES, ROBERT H. Physical basis of the dependence of blood viscosity on tube radius. Am. J. Physiol. 1g8(6) : I 1g3--1200. 1g6o.-Two theories are applied to measurements of the decrease in apparent viscosity of blood in narrow tubes (FahraeusLindqvist effect). First, the effect may be attributed to the presence of unsheared laminae in the fluid (sigma phenomenon), and it was found that the thickness of such laminae must vary between 3.5 p at 10% hematocrit and 34 p at 807& Alternatively, the effect may be caused by a cell-free marginal zone adjacent to the tube wall, which would have to be 6 p thick at 10% hematocrit and I .5 p at 80%. There is a slight suggestion in the data that the effect may be reversed as the flow rate approaches zero (i.e. the apparent viscosity rises in small tubes). Finally, a method is proposed for calculating the effective diameter of a vascular bed, and it was found to be 55 ~1 for a dog’s hind limb.

متن کاملPULSATILE MOTION OF BLOOD IN A CIRCULAR TUBE OF VARYING CROSS-SECTION WITH SLIP FLOW
Pulsatile motion of blood in a circular tube of varying cross-section has been developed by considering slip flow at the tube wall and the blood to be a non- Newtonian biviscous incompressible fluid. The tube wall is supposed to be permeable and the fluid exchange across the wall is accounted for by prescribing the normal velocity of the fluid at the tube wall. The tangential velocity of the fl...
متن کاملBlood viscosity in tube flow: dependence on diameter and hematocrit.
Since the original publications by Martini et al. (Dtsch. Arch. Klin. Med. 169: 212-222, 1930) and Fahraeus and Lindqvist (Am. J. Physiol. 96: 562-568, 1931), it has been known that the relative apparent viscosity of blood in tube flow depends on tube diameter. Quantitative descriptions of this effect and of the dependence of blood viscosity on hematocrit in the different diameter tubes are req...
متن کاملWave Propagation Analysis of CNT Reinforced Composite Micro-Tube Conveying Viscose Fluid in Visco-Pasternak Foundation Under 2D Multi-Physical Fields
In this research, wave propagation analysis in polymeric smart nanocomposite micro-tubes reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) conveying fluid is studied. The surrounded elastic medium is simulated by visco-Pasternak model while the composite micro-tube undergoes electro-magneto-mechanical fields. By means of micromechanics method, the constitutive structural coefficients of nano...
متن کاملEffect of Pyramidal Training on Plasma Lipid Profile and Fibrinogen, and Blood Viscosity of Untrained Young Men
The present study examined the effects of progressive exercise (pyramidal) short-term program on plasma fibrinogen, lipid profile and blood viscosity in untrained young men. Changes and imbalances in homeostasis lead to cause of heart attacks. There is conflicting information about the effect of exercise on these factors. 19 young healthy untrained men were randomly assigned to the exercise gro...
